Ukraine claimed responsibility on Saturday for striking two oil tankers off the coast of Turkiye, according to Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) sources cited by local and international media.

The SBU source reportedly explained that underwater drones targeted vessels linked to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” in the Black Sea — a network of older, concealed tankers that Moscow uses to bypass Western sanctions.

Earlier today, Turkiye’s Ministry of Transport stated in a post on X that an explosion struck the 274-meter tanker Kairos while it sailed from Egypt toward Russia. The ministry deployed two rescue boats, a tugboat, and a relief vessel, and confirmed that all 25 crew members reached safety.

Ukraine has been attacking Russian oil refineries for months, using long-range aerial drones to strike far behind the front lines.
