US forces have redirected 133 commercial vessels toenforce Washington’s naval blockade against Iran as of Oct. 9, US CentralCommand (CENTCOM) said on Friday, amid mounting threats to shipping through theStrait of Hormuz.

Earlier on Friday, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary GuardCorps (IRGC) Navy warned that shipping companies complying with US instructionscould face sanctions, threatening to pursue vessels using routes Tehranconsiders unauthorized, even beyond the strait.

The IRGC also claimed responsibility for striking theVietnam-flagged liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier NV Sunshine after itallegedly attempted to use an unauthorized southern passage through Hormuz,causing a major fire in the ship’s engine room and propulsion system.

Mohammadreza Naqdi, an adviser to the IRGC commander,threatened on Oct. 7 to close routes Tehran considers illegal, asserting thatIranian forces controlled the strategic waterway.

Reuters documented at least 12 attacks, attemptedstrikes, or harassment incidents involving tankers near Hormuz between Sept. 28and Oct. 5, citing maritime security sources.

Shipping activity has declined sharply, with Kplerdata cited by Reuters showing just seven commodity vessels crossing the straiton Oct. 6, the lowest daily figure since July 23. Crude oil flows stood atapproximately 10.1 million barrels per day, about 74% of pre-war levels.

Kuwait has approved a deal worth about $489 million topurchase an air defense system from MARSS, a defense technology company, theBritish government announced on Friday.

The deal aims to strengthen Kuwait's ability to counterdrone attacks amid rising regional tensions.

Under the agreement, MARSS, a London-based company owned byAustralia's EOS, will supply a system equipped with electronic jammingtechnology, radars, interceptor missiles, and an artificialintelligence-enabled command-and-control center.

The agreement forms part of broader UK defense cooperationwith Middle Eastern partners. Britain has a long history of supplying countriesacross the region with weapons, military technology, and fighter jets.

The deal is expected to create around 100 jobs inengineering and manufacturing at MARSS's production facility in Bristol,southwestern England.

Ukraine reported one person killed and 14 others injured ina Russian strike on Zaporizhzhia, while Moscow said its forces had capturedfive communities across the Kharkiv, Sumy, and Zaporizhzhia regions over thepast week.

Among those injured in Zaporizhzhia were a child and apolice officer, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service. Psychologistsalso provided support to 23 people following the attack.

Kyiv reported a series of strikes on Russian military andenergy targets on October 8 and 9. The reported targets included a Pantsir-S1air-defense system in Russia’s Krasnodar region, a drone launch site andcommand post near Donetsk, a fuel depot in Belgorod, and ammunition and supplysites in Russian-controlled areas of Luhansk and Donetsk.

The Ukrainian military also said its forces had targeted theOmsk and Ukhta oil refineries. Ukraine’s Defense Ministry reported that otherrecent strikes had hit Russian air-defense systems, radar installations,command posts, and logistics facilities. “Ukrainian medium-range operations inSeptember had struck more than 30 Russian air-defense, radar, andelectronic-warfare systems, along with more than 40 command posts and over 50logistics sites.”

Meanwhile, Russia claimed that more than 275 Ukrainiantroops had been killed over the past week in an area where its forces said theyhad encircled Ukrainian formations. Moscow also said its forces had captured414 square kilometers of territory and 20 communities since surrounding theUkrainian units, claiming that more than 1,360 Ukrainian personnel had beenkilled during that period.

Across individual fronts, Russia’s Defense Ministry reportedUkrainian losses of more than 1,850 personnel in the Battlegroup North sector,over 1,565 in the Battlegroup West sector, more than 1,215 in the southernsector, over 3,415 in the Battlegroup Center sector, more than 1,845 in theeastern sector, and about 245 in the Battlegroup Dnepr sector.

“Russian air defenses had intercepted 7,389 Ukrainianfixed-wing drones, 17 Flamingo long-range cruise missiles, 31 guided aerialbombs, and nine HIMARS rockets over the past week,” the ministry stated.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) condemned USsanctions against the court, describing them as an “attack on the rule of law.”

In a statement, the ICC said the sanctions undermined thefoundations of the international legal order and challenged the principle thatno one is above the law. “History will judge this moment,” the court added.

The ICC said the measures were intended to intimidate itsstaff and obstruct its work, adding that it would not allow anything to deterit from fulfilling its mandate.

ICC President Tomoko Akane said the court would continuecarrying out its mandate independently and impartially, relying exclusively onthe law and evidence and acting in the interests of the countless victims ofserious crimes.

The court also called on its 125 member states to supportit, warning that its future depended in part on the countries that hadestablished it. It added that future generations, particularly victims of massatrocities, would question how the international community responded when aninstitution created to protect them came under attack.

Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres,condemned the US sanctions, saying the Secretary-General is deeply alarmed bythe expected impact of today’s sanctions on the International Criminal Court asa whole, and in particular, its continued ability to perform its importantmandates, including in relation to the situations referred to it by theSecurity Council and States Parties to the Rome Statute.

“Today’s decision marks a serious blow to our collectivepursuit of international criminal justice, of which the ICC is a key pillar, headded, stressing that accountability for international crimes and delivery ofjustice to victims are central “to our global commitment to peace, security,human rights and fundamental freedoms. “

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk alsocondemned the sanctions, describing them as “unacceptable” and calling forimmediate measures to protect the ICC and those cooperating with it.

“These sanctions, the latest in a series of retaliatorysteps against the ICC and its personnel for the work they do every day toadvance accountability for the very worst violations of human rights, areunacceptable,” Turk said.

The European Commission described the US measures as deeplyregrettable and said it was prepared to take any necessary steps to ensure thecourt could continue operating effectively.

It said it would work closely with theICC to safeguard its operations, expressing hope that the six-month periodbefore the sanctions take effect would leave room for dialogue.

The foreign ministers of Canada, Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Japan,the Netherlands and Britain also issued a joint statement rejecting thesanctions and warning that their implementation could significantly affect theICC’s work, staff and their families.

“As committed supporters of the ICC, we regret and strongly disagreewith the announcement of sanctions,” they stated, reaffirming their support forthe court while calling for “constructive and inclusive dialogue” withcountries that are not parties to the Rome Statute.

Spain separately deplored the measures and reiterated its support forthe ICC’s role in combating impunity, defending victims and upholding themultilateral international order.

German Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig invoked Washington’s historicalrole in establishing international criminal law after World War II, pointing tothe Nuremberg trials and calling the current US position “utterly staggering.”

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide said thesanctions were a matter of serious concern. He added that Norway and othercountries were assessing how best to support and protect the court and whetherthe sanctions could be prevented from taking effect.

Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot strongly condemnedthe measures, warning that efforts to obstruct the court would deprive victimsof a path to justice and allow perpetrators of the gravest crimes to escapeaccountability.

Prevot said Belgium had called for the European Union toactivate its “Blocking Statute,” a mechanism intended to protect Europeanentities from complying with certain foreign sanctions.

By contrast, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahupraised US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio forimposing the sanctions. A statement issued by his office described theICC as a “political body” that posed an existential threat to democracies thatuphold the rule of law and to the principle of national sovereignty.

US President Donald Trump’s administration imposed sanctionson the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Friday, targeting the institutionitself after previously sanctioning individual judges and prosecutors.

The measures block any ICC assets within US jurisdiction andgive US companies and individuals six months to wind down business with thecourt.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused the ICC of improperlytargeting Americans and Israelis and rejected its jurisdiction over UScitizens. “We will ban transactions with this rogue court, cutting off theirresources and crippling its ability to operate against us,” he said in a videoaddress.

Washington has accused the Hague-based tribunal ofpoliticizing war-crimes investigations and pursuing Americans and Israeliswithout legitimate jurisdiction. Rubio warned that the US would continue takingaction unless the court ended what he called its threats against the country.

The ICC condemned the sanctions as an attempt to obstructjustice and an attack on the international legal order. Court President TomokoAkane said the institution would continue carrying out its mandateindependently and appealed to member states for support.

The announcement came hours after South African jurist NaviPillay, a former judge at the ICC and other international courts, received theNobel Peace Prize.

The Trump administration has repeatedly sanctioned ICCprosecutors and judges. Washington has also opposed the court’s arrest warrantsfor Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and anearlier investigation into alleged crimes by US personnel in Afghanistan thatthe ICC has since deprioritized.

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) on Friday widened the area of Saudi airspace where it advises airlines not to fly, while Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) suspended Riyadh services, joining several international carriers that had already halted flights to the Saudi capital.

EASA cited recent attacks on Riyadh airport and risks to civil aviation, adding another area in northwestern Saudi Arabia to its warning. The agency previously cited threats from missile and drone attacks, interception activity, falling debris, and the potential misidentification of civilian aircraft.

Flightradar24 data showed 141 flights to or from Riyadh were canceled and 289 delayed on Friday, after 335 cancellations on Thursday.

Lufthansa Group had also suspended Riyadh flights through October 16, while IndiGo canceled services through October 9. Air India and Akasa Air suspended flights to and from the Saudi capital through October 10.

The disruption followed two attacks on King Khalid International Airport. Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation said three Saudi nationals were killed and several people injured, while a Saudia aircraft was damaged.

The Houthis (Ansarallah) claimed responsibility for attacks on the airport, but Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said on Friday that humanitarian flights to and from Riyadh would be permitted if they obtained authorization from the Humanitarian Operations Coordination Center in Sanaa.

Meanwhile, the Sanaa-based Saba news agency reported Saudi airstrikes across Yemen. Two strikes targeted telecommunications infrastructure in Kitaf wa Al-Buqa district in Saada province, while other strikes hit telecommunications networks in Bilad Al-Rus and Arhab districts in Sanaa province.

Two strikes on Sahar district west of Saada city and six on the Funduq area of Bani Hushaysh district east of Sanaa were also recorded. Saba gave no casualty figures.

Fighting also continued around Bab el-Mandeb and Taiz. A military source quoted by the agency claimed Houthi forces repelled an advance by Saudi-backed forces moving from Lahj toward areas south of Bab el-Mandeb, killing or wounding dozens and destroying or disabling several vehicles. The source also claimed Houthi forces had expelled Saudi-backed forces from all areas of Jabal Habashi district in Taiz.

Houthi forces repelled Saudi-backed forces attempting to advance from Lahj toward Bab el-Mandeb for the second time within hours, according to Saree, who said the advancing forces were targeted with ballistic missiles, artillery, and heavy weapons, destroying more than 22 armored vehicles and killing or wounding dozens, including several commanders.

On October 5, Reuters reported that Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces had retaken territory around the Bab el-Mandeb coastline after intense Saudi airstrikes. Reuters reported on Friday that fighting continued in the area.

A statement issued during a mass rally in Sanaa called for general mobilization and warned that targeting or militarizing Bab el-Mandeb could endanger navigation through the strait.

Bab el-Mandeb links the Red Sea and the Suez Canal route with the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.

The US government suspended Microsoft, Adobe, and several major IT companiesfrom a key employment-based green-card program as part of a broader immigrationcrackdown, Reuters reported on Thursday.

The Labor Department will stop accepting or processing permanent laborcertification applications involving Microsoft, Cognizant, Infosys, TataConsultancy Services, Wipro, HCL Technologies, Capgemini, and Adobe, accordingto Reuters. Vice President JD Vance accused some companies of abusingforeign-worker programs while cutting US jobs, saying the suspensions wouldremain in place until the administration sees changes in their hiringpractices.

The crackdown targets the PERM labor certification process, which isrequired for most employment-based green cards. Reuters noted that Microsoft isthe largest filer of PERM applications, while US immigration data ranked Amazonas the largest employer of approved H-1B beneficiaries in fiscal 2026, followedby Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Apple, and Microsoft.

The administration also launched investigations into nine universities,including Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Brown, and the Massachusetts Institute ofTechnology, over alleged misuse of exchange-visitor visas. Investigators willexamine whether foreign influence, improper financial relationships, or visaabuse are compromising federally funded research.

The US Treasury Department on Thursday sanctioned 17 vessels it said were part of Iran’s remaining “shadow fleet,” targeting a maritime network Washington accuses of moving billions of dollars’ worth of Iranian petroleum and petrochemical products to foreign markets.

The measures were imposed under Operation Economic Outcast, a campaign launched on August 24 to target revenue streams, financial networks and intermediaries Washington says Iran uses to export oil, evade sanctions and fund regional activities.

According to the Treasury, the vessels targeted on Thursday are registered across more than a dozen jurisdictions and operated through a network of international companies, including entities it described as front companies.

The tankers have carried Iranian crude oil, naphtha, fuel oil, liquefied petroleum gas, methanol, bitumen and other petrochemical products. Among them, the Cameroon-flagged crude tanker SHENZHEN transported more than 3.5 million barrels of Iranian crude since November 2025, while the Panama-flagged STARWAY carried more than 3 million barrels of Iranian naphtha since 2025, according to the department. Other vessels were accused of transporting millions of barrels of LPG, fuel oil, methanol and other Iranian products to markets including China, India, Pakistan and elsewhere in Asia and the Middle East.

The vessels and a number of their owners and operators were designated under Executive Order 13902, which targets Iran’s petroleum and petrochemical sectors.

The measures generally block property and interests in property of designated entities that fall under US jurisdiction and prohibit transactions involving them unless authorized by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).

Treasury warned that sanctions violations may result in civil or criminal penalties and that foreign financial institutions involved in significant transactions with designated entities could also face secondary sanctions.

In the same action, OFAC removed the vessels HAKUNA MATATA and PINOCCHIO from its sanctions list. Treasury said both vessels had been identified as part of Iran’s shadow fleet in June 2025 but were later removed from the network and sold to non-sanctioned or US-aligned operators.

Treasury also warned foreign companies and financial institutions that facilitating money laundering or sanctions evasion on Iran’s behalf could expose them to US restrictions or exclusion from the American financial system.

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that Washington was holding “productive discussions” with Iran and would not launch an attack before the November 3 midterm elections, as diplomatic exchanges continued over reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump added that the US blockade of Iranian ports remained “in full force and effect,” describing Iran as being in a severely weakened economic and military position.

He also claimed that 22 million barrels of oil had passed through the strait overnight.

On Wednesday, Trump said his special envoy Steve Witkoff was working toward an agreement with Tehran and is “doing very well.”

Iran Reviews US Response

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said negotiations with Washington were continuing through mediators and that Tehran was reviewing the US response to its seven-day proposal.

He said Tehran was studying Washington’s position and expected to respond within the coming days.

Under the proposal, Iran has offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume negotiations within seven days in exchange for measures including the lifting of the US maritime blockade, restrictions on Iranian oil exports and steps toward restoring a regional ceasefire.

Washington and Tehran remain divided over the sequencing and scope of those measures.

CENTCOM: Hormuz Traffic Rising

Separately, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Thursday that commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz was gaining momentum.

CENTCOM said it briefed international shipping industry partners during a virtual meeting, where commanders highlighted what the command described as increasing freedom of navigation as commercial traffic rose.

The command said US forces had supported the shipment of more than 1.25 billion barrels of crude oil from Gulf partners through the Strait of Hormuz in recent months.

CENTCOM also said Iran had exported no crude during the same period because of the US blockade on Iranian ports.

The figures are US military claims. Independent estimates of oil flows through the strait vary depending on methodology. Shipping data have shown a significant recovery in Gulf crude exports in recent weeks, although traffic through Hormuz remains volatile amid continuing attacks and military tensions.

“We presented our proposal, known as the seven-dayplan, and heard the Americans’ views in response,” Araghchi told reporters.

At a Republican campaign rally in San Antonio onWednesday, US President Donald Trump said his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, wasmaking progress toward an agreement with Tehran, even as Washington consideredrenewed large-scale military operations in the coming weeks. Trump claimedIranian officials were “willing to offer anything” to end the confrontation butacknowledged that reaching a deal “isn’t really something that I want to do.”

Iranian Vice President and Atomic Energy Organizationchief Mohammad Eslami, however, ruled out surrendering Tehran’s uraniumstockpiles or abandoning domestic enrichment. Nuclear negotiations were not onthe agenda, he said, dismissing recent US statements as an “expression ofdesperation.”

The seven-day proposal addresses maritime, economic,and diplomatic issues, offering to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resumenuclear talks within a week in exchange for Washington lifting its navalblockade, easing restrictions on Iranian oil sales, and restoring a regionalceasefire. Qatar has mediated the latest exchanges.

The initiative builds on the June 17 IslamabadMemorandum of Understanding, which established a temporary framework for endingmilitary operations, lifting the blockade, and reopening the waterway. Tehranis seeking a broader settlement based on that arrangement.

Uranium enrichment remains a major obstacle, withearlier negotiations having deferred discussions over Iran’s stockpile and thegovernment continuing to reject demands to halt domestic enrichment or transferthe material abroad.

No party has claimed responsibility for the incident so far.

Sistan-Baluchestan, which borders Pakistan and Afghanistan, has facedrepeated attacks targeting Iranian security forces and the IslamicRevolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Armed opposition groups, including Jaishal-Adl, have claimed responsibility for previous attacks in the province.

In a similar incident on Monday, two Iranian police officers were killedand another was wounded when their vehicle came under fire.

Yemen's Houthis (Ansarallah) said on Thursday they had shot down a Saudiarmed reconnaissance drone over Taiz province and launched ballistic missilesat Saudi forces gathered at the Qaoua military camp in the Ras Al-Arah area,claiming direct hits.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree also said the group had struckKing Khalid International Airport in Riyadh with a ballistic missile, withoutproviding further details.

On Wednesday, Ansarallah identified the same airport as a target twice—first with several drones and later with a ballistic missile— framing theattacks as retaliation for the Saudi-led military campaign in Yemen and theKingdom's continued blockade.

Rashad Al-Alimi, chairman of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council andsupreme commander of the armed forces, declared last week that militaryoperations had begun to restore government authority across the country. Helater named the campaign "Dawn of Yemen."

Internationally-recognized government forces have since sought torecapture territory around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and Mocha that the Houthisseized in September. The Houthis, meanwhile, said they had repelled anattempted Saudi advance toward their positions in eastern Al-Jawf province,with dozens of Saudi personnel sustaining casualties and several militaryvehicles put out of action.

The agency did not identify the vessel or provide details on the numberof people injured, the extent of the damage, or the vessel's conditionfollowing the attack.

Responsibility for the attack has not been established, and UKMTO didnot specify the type or origin of the projectiles.

Three people were killed and 36 injured in attacks on Saudi Arabia'sAbha and King Khalid International Airports, the General Authority of CivilAviation said on Wednesday, with Saudi citizens and foreign residents among thecasualties.

The two airports came under attack on Tuesday and Wednesday,respectively, although the Authority did not identify those responsible.

At Abha International Airport, two female residents, a Moroccan and anAlgerian, were killed, while 28 citizens and residents were injured. Thewounded included Bangladeshi and Filipino nationals, with injuries ranging fromminor to serious.

At King Khalid International Airport, a Sudanese resident died and eightpeople were injured. The wounded included five Saudi citizens, two Egyptianresidents and a Pakistani national, with injuries ranging from minor toserious.

Earlier today, Yemen’s Houthis (Ansarallah) said they had targeted KingKhalid International Airport in Riyadh twice —first with several drones andlater with a ballistic missile, framing the attacks as a retaliation to theSaudi-led military campaign in Yemen and the Kingdom’s continued blockade.

Rashad Al-Alimi, chairman of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council andsupreme commander of the armed forces, declared last week the start of militaryoperations to restore government authority across the country. He later namedthe campaign “Dawn of Yemen.”

Government forces have sought to recapture territory around the Babel-Mandeb Strait and Mocha that the Houthis seized in September. The Houthis,meanwhile, reported repelling an attempted Saudi advance toward their positionsin eastern Al-Jawf province, claiming that dozens of Saudi personnel werekilled or wounded and several military vehicles were destroyed.

Iraq has secured a new position at UNESCO, with itsPermanent Representative to the organization, Asaad Turki Suari, taking thechair of the Intergovernmental Committee for Promoting the Return of CulturalProperty to Its Countries of Origin or Its Restitution in Case of IllicitAppropriation (ICPRCP) for the 2026–2028 term.

In a statement, Iraq’s Permanent Mission to UNESCO said theappointment marks Suari’s eighth position within the organization since hebegan serving as Iraq’s permanent representative in Paris nearly two years ago.

The new post follows a series of roles Suari has held atUNESCO, including deputy chair of the organization’s 43rd General Conference,representing the Arab Group, and deputy chair of the IntergovernmentalCommittee for Promoting the Return of Cultural Property. He has also served onseveral UNESCO Executive Board committees.

His other roles have included membership in the Committee onConventions and Recommendations, the Committee on Non-Governmental Partners,and the Intergovernmental Committee for Promoting the Return of CulturalProperty.

Suari also served as deputy chair of the extraordinarysession of the General Assembly of States Parties to the World HeritageConvention and as a member of the Arab committee established for the Memory ofthe World Register.

Yemen’s Houthis (Ansarallah) on Wednesday said they had repelled an attempted Saudi advance toward their positions in eastern Al-Jawf province, claiming dozens of Saudi personnel were killed or wounded and a number of military vehicles destroyed.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group targeted the advancing forces and their concentrations with ballistic missiles and drones, noting that they made no advance.

Earlier today, he said the Houthis had targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh twice, first with several drones and later with a ballistic missile, claiming both attacks hit the airport and disrupted air traffic. Two other operations targeted Abha International Airport and the Khamis Mushait air base with ballistic missiles and drones, claiming air traffic at Abha was disrupted and the base sustained damage.

In Yemen, Saree said Ansarallah fired ballistic missiles at what he described as Saudi military supplies that had arrived at Badr camp near Aden International Airport, claiming a number of Saudi officers were killed or wounded.

Saudi authorities did not immediately confirm whether King Khalid International Airport or Abha International Airport had been hit.

Meanwhile, Turki Al-Malki, spokesperson for the Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen, said Saudi air defenses intercepted and destroyed a Houthi ballistic missile north of Riyadh on Wednesday.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Yemen’s internationally recognized government said the Houthis attacked Aden International Airport at dawn on Wednesday with two ballistic missiles and explosive-laden drones while a civilian flight was approaching the airport to land and aircraft, passengers, and airport employees were present.

On Oct. 4, Rashad Al-Alimi, chairman of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council and supreme commander of the armed forces, announced the start of military operations to restore government authority across the country. He later named the campaign “Dawn of Yemen.”

German authorities on Tuesday arrested former foreignintelligence chief August Hanning and his former aide, Manfred D., on suspicionof espionage, attempted treason and mishandling classified information,including material concerning Iran’s nuclear program and the Russian military.

Hanning headed the BND, Germany’s foreign intelligenceservice, from December 1998 to November 2005. Manfred D., whose full identityhas not been disclosed, also served as chief of staff to Hanning’s successorsfor about 14 years before moving to the private sector, where he worked as asecurity consultant, according to Deutsche Welle.

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office did not identify thecountries that may have benefited from the information. The case comes asGermany seeks to strengthen its intelligence capabilities and improve thereputation of its security services amid growing concerns over Russianespionage and sabotage activities.

Authorities are searching premises linked to both men atseveral locations, including Berlin.

Prosecutors said Manfred D. also served as chief of staff toHanning’s successors between 2012 and 2026. He allegedly used his position toaccess classified information, which he then passed to Hanning in exchange forpayment.

Manfred D. is suspected of aiding and abetting attemptedtreason and treasonous espionage.

Prosecutors said their current findings indicate thatManfred D. provided Hanning with about 2,000 documents over the years, many ofwhich contained classified information intended solely for internal use by theBND.

In one instance, Hanning allegedly used classifiedintelligence to prepare an analysis for an officer of a foreign intelligenceservice, although it was unclear whether the material reached its intendedrecipient.

Hanning is also accused of maintaining close contact with arepresentative of another foreign intelligence service and passing that personpolitical information based partly on material provided by Manfred D. overseveral years.

According to German broadcaster ARD, some of the informationleaked by Hanning had originated from foreign intelligence partners.

Marc Henrichmann, chairman of the German parliament’sintelligence oversight committee, told AFP that Germany “will not tolerate thebetrayal of secrets.”

“Whoever allies themselves with the enemies of our liberaldemocracy will be found out,” he added, describing the conduct attributed toHanning as a betrayal of his official duties.

Henrichmann also criticized the ability of senior formerofficials with access to classified information to move into the private sectorand potentially use their networks and access to sensitive information forpersonal gain, which could give Germany’s adversaries access to sensitiveinformation or networks.

“We have repeatedly warned the federal government about thishighly problematic issue,” he said. “Clearly, such practices also provide anavenue for hostile intelligence services. The full truth about this matter mustalso be uncovered.”

Hanning had also come under scrutiny in connection with theChristina Block child-abduction case. Searches of his properties in September2025 during that investigation helped lead authorities to the current espionageinquiry.

In that case, Hanning and a retired police officer wereaccused of accepting more than €100,000 ($112,000) from Block to return thechildren from Denmark, where they were living with their father.

As part of that investigation, authorities searchedHanning’s properties in September 2025, leading to the opening of the currentinvestigation.

The United States and Iran supplied 86% of the 16,822military drones exported worldwide between 2022 and 2025, with nearly all ofthem going to opposite sides of the war in Ukraine, according to data from theStockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) compiled by VisualCapitalist.

The United States exported 7,593 drones and Iran 6,800, or45.1% and 40.4% of the global total, respectively. Ukraine received 95% of USdrone exports, while 99% of Iran's went to Russia.

SIPRI counts drones weighing at least 150 kilograms, alongwith one-way attack drones and loitering munitions, which are designed tostrike once and be destroyed. Small first-person-view and commercial drones arelargely excluded. Single-use drones make up 97% of the global total, whichexplains how a few wartime transfers can run into the thousands.

Nearly all of Iran’s recorded exports were Shahed-136drones, including units produced in Russia under Iranian license, which SIPRIcounts as Iranian transfers.

Exports fall off sharply below the top two. Germany rankedthird with 1,000 drones, followed by Poland with 690 and Turkiye with 381. Theseven smallest exporters, from Czechia to Sweden, delivered 89 drones combined.

Iran Overtakes The US In 2025

US drone exports rose from 1,010 in 2022 to 3,219 in 2024,then dropped to 402 in 2025, the year new US military aid to Ukraine came to ahalt. Iran delivered about 2,000 drones a year from 2023 to 2025, including2,002 in 2025, five times the US total.

Most US drones shipped in 2025 went to Taiwan, whichreceived 291 loitering munitions. Ukraine received 100 US-made loiteringmunitions that year, paid for by Britain.

Turkiye's Wider Reach

Although it ranked fifth by volume, Turkiye sold drones to28 countries, more than half of the 54 that imported military drones and nearlythree times as many as the United States or China, which supplied 10 each. Itsbuyers range from 12 African countries to NATO members Poland and Romania, aswell as Pakistan, Kuwait and Ukraine.

About three-quarters of Turkiye's exports were larger,reusable aircraft such as the Bayraktar TB2. It supplied 281 of the 486 suchdrones exported worldwide, or 58%. Measured by SIPRI's trend-indicator value,which weights weapons by military capability rather than units, Turkiye was thelargest drone exporter of the period.

Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Pakistan on Monday agreed to move immediately toward implementing their collective-defense commitments under the Mecca Defense Alliance, including measures to provide agreed military forces and capabilities and ensure their rapid deployment in Saudi Arabia.

The decision came at an emergency meeting of the alliance’s Strategic Political and Defense Committee in Riyadh amid escalating attacks on the Kingdom and fighting in Yemen.

In a joint statement published by Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, the committee said it had decided to “move immediately to the practical implementation” of its collective-defense commitments and take the necessary measures to provide the agreed military forces and capabilities and ensure their rapid deployment in Saudi Arabia.

The deployments will be carried out under approved arrangements and in accordance with the national laws of the three countries. The statement did not specify the number or type of forces and capabilities involved or when the deployments would begin.

The three countries said the security of each member was an integral part of their collective security and that implementing the Mecca agreement would strengthen deterrence and their ability to confront threats.

They also condemned attempts to target Mecca and Medina, as well as continued attacks on Saudi cities and civilian and economic facilities. Turkiye and Pakistan praised the readiness and performance of Saudi forces in responding to the threats.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the meeting also discussed diplomatic efforts related to the situation in Yemen. “We discussed in detail what kind of support could be provided for Saudi Arabia’s defense and, on the other hand, what could be done to resolve the issue peacefully and through dialogue,” Fidan told reporters after the meeting.

He said Saudi Arabia had taken a “very constructive approach” toward resolving the issue and that the participants had exchanged views on possible steps.

The committee also appointed retired Pakistani Lt. Gen. Nauman Mahmood as the alliance’s first secretary-general for a three-year term.

Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Pakistan signed the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement on Aug. 7, establishing a collective-defense framework under which an attack on one member is considered an attack on all three.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Monday that the USwould honor its bilateral security commitments to Saudi Arabia amid renewedfighting between Yemeni government forces and Iran-aligned Houthis.

“The United States has a defense and security agreement withSaudi Arabia, and we intend to live by it,” Rubio told a press conference inWashington, adding that Saudi Arabia had “a right to defend itself” againstcontinued Houthi attacks.

The fighting has intensified around the Bab Al-MandabStrait, a critical shipping corridor linking the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

“What is happening now in Yemen is a counterattack againstHouthi aggression,” Rubio said.

Yemeni government forces said they had taken control of thecity of Mokha in western Taiz Province and launched attacks on Houthi positionsin the Dhubab district overlooking the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait.

A US official told Al Jazeera that Washington was providingSaudi Arabia with support to counter Houthi attacks, including planningassistance, intelligence sharing and aerial refueling.

The official said Saudi Arabia was using US aerial refuelingcapabilities to defend its airspace and support forces opposing the Houthis.

The US has withdrawn all 12 B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford in Britain, but they remain capable of conducting global strikes from the continental US, a Pentagon spokesperson told Reuters on Sunday.

The Wall Street Journal reported that security concerns over suspected plots targeting the base drove the withdrawal after it served as a hub for US strikes on Iran.

Citing an official familiar with the intelligence, the newspaper reported that US officials were aware of an Iran-linked plot to attack a bomber and kill personnel at the base. A senior US official said a branch of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had “recruited” British nationals for the alleged operation, which included plans for a diversion in a nearby neighborhood.

British counter-terrorism police separately said five British men were arrested near Fairford on Sept. 27, initially on suspicion of Explosives Act offenses and later on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. A sixth suspect, a dual UK-Iranian national, was arrested in London on Oct. 1, and all six were later released on bail. Petrol was recovered from the vehicles, but no improvised explosive devices were found.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham claimed that there were “strong indications” that Iran played a role. Tehran denied involvement and summoned British Ambassador Hugo Shorter over the allegations.

Israel killed Saqr Nabil Mousa Al-Qaisi in a strike in thesouthern Gaza city of Khan Younis, the Israeli military said on Sunday,identifying him as a member of Hamas' "elite unit" who participatedin the Oct. 7, 2023, attack.

The military also named Al-Qaisi as director of the Turkishhumanitarian organization Deniz Feneri, accusing him of using his positionthere to recruit members for Hamas and provide them with financial support.

It further alleged that Al-Qaisi had recently worked onplans targeting Israeli forces and efforts to rebuild Hamas' militarycapabilities, saying those activities violated the October 2025 ceasefireagreement.

Deniz Feneri later denied that Al-Qaisi was its director,describing him as only a member and volunteer with the organization.

Syria on Sunday condemned Israel's continued excavation andfortification work along the separation line in southern Quneitra, accusing itof violating the 1974 disengagement agreement as work advances on the"Sufa 53" military project near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry described the latest work as a "blatantbreach" and a "flagrant violation" of international law, callingfor international action to halt Israel's ongoing incursions and militaryactivity in southern Syria.

The ministry also characterized Israel's "aggressive approach"and ground operations as a direct threat to regional security and stability,reaffirming Damascus's right to exercise full sovereignty over its territory.

Israeli forces resumed excavation work west of the village of Asha inQuneitra countryside, Syria's Al-Ikhbariya television reported on Sunday,noting that the work is part of "Sufa 53," a project involving theconstruction of a road along the separation line in the border area.

The work comes amid wider Israeli military activity in southern Syria.Al-Ikhbariya has documented incursions into the countryside of Quneitra andDaraa in recent days, along with earthmoving, fortification work and theestablishment of military positions.

Known also as the "Great Storm," Sufa 53 is an Israeliengineering and military project that began gradually in mid-2022 inside thebuffer zone in Quneitra countryside. Although construction began before the fallof President Bashar al-Assad, the pace of the work increased in late 2024.

At the center of the project is an approximately 8-meter-wide militaryroad, accompanied by earth berms reaching about 5 meters high, trenches andobservation posts along a route bordering the Golan Heights inside the area ofseparation.

According to Syria's Sijil Center, which monitors Israeli operations,the project extends beyond a single site in Quneitra. It starts near theoutskirts of Hader in the north, passes through Jabata al-Khashab and Hamidiya,then continues through Qahhtaniyah, Ruwayhina, Bir Ajam and Bariqa beforereaching Asha and the border triangle in the south.

Sijil described the project as part of Israel's stated securityarrangements along the border. Some observers cited by the Center, however,view the continuing engineering work as an effort to change conditions on theground inside the buffer zone.

In some areas, Israeli forces have advanced between about 300 and 1,000meters into the buffer zone, according to reports. Local accounts have alsodescribed the appropriation of large areas of agricultural land for theproject, including about 7,000 dunams in Jabata al-Khashab.

Israel did not comment on the Syrian allegation. However, it previouslysaid its operations in southern Syria are based on "securityconsiderations and the need to prevent potential threats along itsborder."

The current situation dates back to the disengagement agreement signedby Syria and Israel on May 31, 1974. The accord established separate militarypositions and a buffer zone between the two sides, with the United NationsDisengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) responsible for monitoring the area.

UNDOF monitors the ceasefire, oversees implementation of thedisengagement agreement and maintains the buffer zone between Syrian andIsraeli forces.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned onSunday that Tehran would respond more forcefully to any renewed militaryaction, while noting that diplomacy remained the only viable path to ending thewar.

Addressing ambassadors, chargés d’affaires, and headsof international missions in Tehran, Araghchi urged other countries to engagewith Iran and avoid involvement in further US or Israeli attacks. “We hope thatthe United States chooses the path of wisdom and rationality, but if it onceagain moves toward military solutions, we are more prepared than before andwill take whatever action is necessary to defend ourselves.”

He also rejected Washington’s expanding sanctionscampaign, arguing that neither military nor economic pressure would forceTehran to change course.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently claimedthat Washington was cutting off Iranian oil revenues, saying that Tehran loadedno crude onto tankers in September and predicting it would have “no oil on thewater” this week. The Trump administration has also broadened sanctions againstIranian financial and industrial networks, including the automotive, rail, manufacturing,and steel sectors, under “Operation Economic Outcast.”

Despite the pressure, Araghchi reaffirmed Tehran’swillingness to negotiate, saying, “Only a solution based on negotiations,justice, fairness and dignified diplomacy can work and find a final solution toend this war.”

During diplomatic contacts around the UN GeneralAssembly in New York, Iran presented conditions for reopening the Strait ofHormuz tied to commitments it expects from Washington, although Araghchi didnot detail them in Sunday’s remarks.

Meetings with Gulf countries in New York, he added,had opened a “new path” toward greater regional trust and cooperation on peaceand security.

On Europe, the foreign minister called on governmentsto reconsider their approach toward Tehran, accusing them of involvement in theUS war against Iran. Citing remarks by NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte thatup to 5,000 US sorties had been flown from European bases during the war,Araghchi urged European countries to clarify their role.

Araghchi also disputed claims that Iran had becomeinternationally isolated, pointing to the delegation’s diplomatic engagementsduring the General Assembly.
