Iraq concludes general voting in 2025 parliamentary elections
Shafaq News – Baghdad (Updated at 18:25)
Polling stations across Iraq closed at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, marking the end of the general voting phase in the country’s 2025 parliamentary elections.
Voting began at 7:00 a.m. under the supervision of the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC), covering all 18 provinces. More than 20 million eligible voters were invited to cast their ballots to elect 329 members of parliament.
The IHEC said preliminary results are expected within 24 hours, while final participation rates are expected to be announced later Tuesday night.
In a statement issued after the close of polls, the office of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said Iraqis had once again “taken a distinguished step toward greater stability and success, strengthening the democratic system that reflects their free constitutional will and their desire to continue building the state and supporting its institutions.”
The office added that the government had fulfilled one of its key commitments under its executive program — ensuring the constitutional timelines and the peaceful transfer of power through the people’s free choice.
Today’s vote followed a special voting day held on Sunday, during which about 1.3 million members of the security forces, internally displaced persons cast their ballots.
The commission reported smooth operations throughout the day, with polling stations closing automatically at the scheduled time under the pre-programmed electronic voting system.
