Erdogan informs Trump: safe zone extends from Iraqi border to Jarablus

Shafaq News/ The Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at a news conference with his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump in Washington that he wants to resettle two million Syrians in the safe area created in northern Syria.

Erdogan pointed out that Ankara's goal is to establish a "safe zone" from the Iraqi-Syrian border to Jarablus city.

U.S. President Donald Trump said that the deal in northern Syria has been coherent so far.

He said that Ankara's purchase of the Russian S-400 missile system poses a major challenge to relations between the two countries, but he hopes to resolve it.

Trump said at the start of the meeting with Erdogan that the United States has kept troops in Syria to protect the oil fields there.

He said he would talk to the Senate about the F-35 deal, which Ankara wants to conclude with Washington.

Ahead of Trump's meeting with Erdogan, U.S. Defense Secretary ,Mark Esper said that the United States would continue to support the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces.

Esper stressed the role of the SDF in helping to prevent the resurgence of ISIS.

He explained that the withdrawal of the U.S. military from Ain al-Arab area in northeastern Syria, may take another week. He added that when the partial withdrawal is complete, the U.S. military will still have about 600 troops in Syria.
