US President Donald Trump on Tuesday confirmed he will lead the newly formed Peace Council, charged with overseeing Gaza’s transitional phase, after the United Nations Security Council recently approved a resolution authorizing an international force to stabilize the Strip

In a post on Truth Social, Trump hailed the vote as “remarkable,” calling it a step toward broader peace worldwide. “It is a moment of true historic significance,” he added.

The Council’s decision comes amid sharp divisions within Palestinian and widespread opposition from factions including Hamas. The movement described the resolution as failing to protect the basic political and humanitarian rights of Palestinians and ignoring the impact of what it called a “war of extermination” in Gaza over the past two years.

Hamas also warned that the resolution imposes “international tutelage over Gaza,” creating conditions that could isolate the territory from the rest of Palestine and advance objectives Israel had not achieved during its war on the Strip.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian leadership, led by President Mahmoud Abbas, welcomed the international push to halt the war and stabilize Gaza, stressing that implementing the resolution must secure a comprehensive ceasefire, lift the blockade, allow unfettered aid delivery, and start reconstruction.

Last week, Israeli media reported that talks between Washington and Israel on the next stage of Trump’s Gaza plan have stalled. The truce, brokered on October 13, ended more than two years of conflict that killed 69,187 Palestinians, most of them women and children.

According to Channel 13, the US is pressing ahead with phase two—focused on reconstruction and governance—while Israel refuses to advance without Hamas’s full disarmament.
