Minister of Justice: Personal Jaafari Law gave unprecedented privileges for women

Al-Shammari said in a speech at the ceremony hosted by the Ministry of Justice on the occasion of International Women's Day , briefed by " Shafaq News " , “ that the Jaafari law came to lift the injustice on women over the past decades due to man-made laws and underdevelopedsocial traditions.

He explained that the Jaafari Personal Status Law gave large privileges to women including those related to marriage and determine the age of puberty and inheritance , thus raising her prestige and dignity and enhances their social position that enable them to exercise their freedom in accordance with the regulations and legitimate bases.

Al-Shammari added that al-Jaafari law gives women the right to obtain their rights and inheritance when they reach the age of nine .

He noted that the Jaafari law considered the woman as the only rightful heir to her father , "If she was the only child " Contrary to what was stated by the Current Personal Status Law, which gives them half the inheritance , and the other half goes to the relatives of her father , the Jaafari law gives women the right to include the marriage contract, according to what she sees of binding conditions to her husband.

The Minister of Justice expressed regret for the media whirlwind waged by some of the parties, calling opponents of the Jaafari law to dialogue and away from defamation.

The draft of the personal status and al-Jaafari judiciary submitted by the Minister of Justice, Hassan Shammari belonging to the Virtue (al-Fadhela) Party , to the Council of Ministers has raised large debate during the past month .

The Iraqi cabinet approved during its meeting on the 25 of last February to pass al-Jaafari judiciary bill and transfer it to the parliament to vote on it .

Opponents say that the other sects will go also to enact laws of their own, which would cause chaos in the laws , as the laws are based on disputed constitutional article.
