Judiciary release protesters in response to Al-Kadhimi’s call
Shafaq News / The Supreme Judicial Council of Iraq directed on Sunday all courts to release protesters.
"In line with the call of Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi on May 9, 2020, the Supreme Judicial Council directed all the courts that have cases regarding the protesters to release them,” A statement to the judiciary media, reported to Shafaq News.
The Supreme Judicial Council had previously instructed investigating judges to release those arrested on the subject of the demonstration, given that demonstrations are a right guaranteed under Article 38 of the Constitution, provided that it is not accompanied by an act contrary to the law against state institutions or against persons.
Al-Kadhimi’s office announced on Saturday, that “the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces ordered a consultative meeting of the Ministerial Council for National Security held today to release detainees from the demonstrators in coordination with the judiciary except those involved in killings, protect peaceful demonstrators and prevent violence in all its forms.
