Saairun reveals its position on "the electoral districts" proposals

Shafaq News / Saairun Alliance, led by Muqtada al-Sadr, revealed today, Tuesday, the proposals of the political blocs regarding the electoral districts, confirming its desire for each seat to be a single electoral district.

MP of the coalition, Riad Al-Masoudi, told Shafaq News agency, "Political differences between the parliamentary blocs on Article 15 of the election law still exist", indicating, "the Presidency of the Parliament, the Legal Committee and the heads of the blocks are trying to reach a proposal or a compromise that satisfies all political parties".

He added, "there are different opinions and proposals for the political blocs regarding the multiplicity of electoral districts", explaining, "the Kurdish forces want Iraq to be a single electoral district, while the Iraqi forces want multiple districts in some provinces and one in other provinces".

Al-Masoudi added, "Saairun Alliance wants each seat in parliament to be single electoral district. This means that every 100,000 electoral votes will be represented in a seat in 329 electoral districts in the country".

Al-Fath, according to Al-Masoudi, says that the number of electoral districts in the governorate must be decided according to its population. Each governorate, thereby, "will have different electoral districts than the other".

The Parliamentary Legal Committee revealed yesterday, Monday, an upcoming meeting of the political blocs to agree on the electoral districts included in the election law according to the new amendments, while no agreement has been reached on a specific formula so far.

Last Friday, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, announced that the parliamentary elections will be held on June 6, 2021, pledging to provide international monitoring of the electoral process.

The International community welcomed this step and pledged to support it. However, the political blocs have not reached an agreement on the mechanisms of the elections so far.
