Iraq’s Coordination Framework (CF), a predominantly Shiite alliance that is the largest parliamentary bloc, nominated current Babil Governor Adnan Fayhan as first deputy speaker of parliament, a source informed Shafaq News on Monday.

According to the source, if Fayhan assumes the new role, the Asaib Ahl al-Haq movement plans to nominate Ali Turki to succeed him as governor of Babil.

Fahd al-Jubouri of the National Wisdom (Al-Hikma al-Wataniya) Movement, a member of the CF, said on Sunday that the Framework reached a decision to allocate the first deputy speaker position to political forces linked with armed factions.

Another informed source told our agency that the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) parliamentary bloc nominated Shakhwan Abdullah as the second deputy speaker.

Iraq’s newly elected parliament is scheduled to hold its first session today, focusing on two key agenda items: swearing in new members and electing the speaker and deputies.

Parliament’s leadership consists of a speaker and two deputies, responsible for managing legislative sessions and overseeing parliamentary operations. In line with post-2003 political traditions, the speaker position is reserved for the Sunni community, the first deputy for the Shiite community, and the second deputy for the Kurdish community.
