The Kurdistan Region may form its new government this autumn, with political parties working to resolve the remaining obstacles, Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani said on Saturday.
Speaking at a press conference in Al-Sulaymaniyah, Talabani, who is also a senior figure in the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), called for meetings between the PUK and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), saying talks between the two parties are necessary to move the political process forward.
Some obstacles to forming the new cabinet may already have been resolved while others remain, he said, expressing confidence that the remaining differences can be overcome.
Talabani also said the PUK’s alliance with the New Generation Movement is serious and that the party will remain committed to it. He noted that the alliance does not necessarily mean New Generation wants to join the government, adding that the decision rests with the movement and that the PUK respects its choice.
The Kurdistan Region’s 10th cabinet remains unformed nearly two years after the October 20, 2024 parliamentary election. The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) won 39 seats and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) 23 in the 100-seat legislature, leaving neither with enough seats to form a government alone.
On September 20, Iraq’s Federal Supreme Court postponed until October 26 a case concerning the delayed formation of the Kurdistan Region’s new government.
