Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) leader Masoud Barzani and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani on Tuesday reviewed post-election developments and regional stability.
According to a statement from Barzani’s office, both leaders, during a meeting on the sidelines of the Middle East Peace and Security Forum (MEPS 2025) in Duhok, expressed hope that the recent parliamentary elections would produce a more effective and inclusive government capable of addressing citizens’ needs across all regions.
They also pressed for urgent amendments to Iraq’s electoral law to improve transparency and guarantee fairer representation in future cycles, while their discussion expanded to broader political changes inside Iraq and shifting dynamics across the region.
The meeting followed Iraq’s sixth parliamentary vote since 2003, where turnout surpassed 56%. Barzani’s KDP secured over 1.09 million votes and 26 seats, maintaining its position as the country’s largest Kurdish bloc and one of the top forces in parliament, while al-Sudani’s Reconstruction and Development Alliance (al-Ima’ar wal-Tanmiya) won 46 seats, leading nationwide.
