Mohammed al-Halbousi, leader of the National Progress (Taqaddum) Party and former Speaker of Parliament, cast his ballot on Tuesday in Iraq’s general parliamentary elections.

The party is fielding candidates nationwide, with strongholds in al-Anbar, Nineveh, Baghdad, and other western provinces.

Taqaddum’s key allied blocs include Qimam (Tahaluf Qimam) led by Khaled Battal; al-Anbar Huwiyatuna, led by Ali Farhan al-Dulaimi; and the Leadership Coalition in al-Anbar (Ittihad al-Qiyada) led by Khalil al-Dulaimi.

In the 2021 parliamentary elections, the alliance won 37 seats, becoming one of the leading Sunni blocs in Iraq’s legislature.

Al-Halbousi’s participation comes amid intensified competition among Sunni political forces, including al-Azm, al-Siyada, and the National Resolve Alliance (Al-Hasm Al-Watani), as they seek to shape the next government.
