Iraqi authorities detained Hussein Talib Abboud Marouh Al-Fadhli, director general of the Oil Products Distribution Company, in Baghad on Thursday, over alleged corruption cases, an official source told Shafaq News.
The arrest took place hours before Al-Fadhli was scheduled to take the constitutional oath as a replacement member of parliament, the source said, adding that security personnel took him into custody in Baghdad’s Al-Rabee Street area.
Al-Fadhli had been selected as a replacement lawmaker for Ammar Mousa from the National State Forces Alliance in Baghdad province after several elected lawmakers moved to executive positions in the current government. Several replacement lawmakers were scheduled to take the constitutional oath during Thursday’s parliament session as part of procedures to fill vacant seats in the sixth electoral term.
The Iraqi government established a wide anti-corruption campaign, the Dawn Crackdown, which led in its first phase to the arrest of about 67 officials, lawmakers, and businessmen.
Earlier, Oil Minister Bassem Al-Abadi urged stronger efforts to address challenges in the oil sector and combat corruption, stating that the next phase will focus on reviewing and improving performance.
The Oil Products Distribution Company operates under Iraq’s Ministry of Oil and manages fuel supply operations, petroleum product distribution networks, and filling stations across the country.
