U.S. military plane crashes north of Baghdad , no casualties

Shafaq News /A U.S. military plane crashed into an Iraqi military base north of the capital on Monday without causing fatalities as four members of a U.S. Air Force plane were injured in an accident that occurred during the landing operation at Taji Air Force Base, north of Baghdad, the U.S.-led coalition said.

Army Col. Myles B. Caggins III, military spokesman for Combined Joint Task Force -- Operation Inherent Resolve, said fire and rescue teams responded to the incident, which occurred at approximately 10:10 p.m. local time.

The teams "extinguished the fire and assisted in an evacuation of the plane," Caggins said in a statement. The cargo aircraft also sustained structural damage, he said.

"Four service members on the plane sustained non-life-threatening injuries and are being treated at Camp Taji's medical facility," Caggins added. "Enemy activity is not suspected."

The incident is under investigation.

A security source in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad said, on Monday, that an American military plane was damaged during its landing at Iraqi Taji base as a result of a technical defect.

The source told Shafaq News agency, that the C130 belonging to the international coalition led by the United States of America carried out an emergency landing at Taji Air Force Base, as a result of a technical defect, causing it to hit concrete pieces at the end of the runway.

He added that the Iraqi fire brigades rushed to extinguish a fire caused by the accident after the ignition of two engines, without causing casualties.

Meanwhile, Iraq’s military said a missile struck near to Baghdad’s airport, which includes a military base frequented by U.S. troops. The statement said the missile was launched from an area south of the airport.

Security forces have initiated a search operation to uncover the perpetrators, the statement said. An Iraqi security official said the rocket struck close to the headquarters of the U.S.-led coalition.

The attack is the first to target the airport since May 6 when three katyusha rockets struck near its military sector. That attack did not cause any casualties.
