The Portuguese Football Federation provisionally suspended national team captain Cristiano Ronaldo on Saturday after opening disciplinary proceedings over his recent departure from the national team camp.

Ronaldo, 41, who plays for Saudi club Al Nassr, left Portugal's camp ahead of a Nations League match against Denmark following a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus. The forward accused Jesus of breaking promises about his playing time after being left on the bench for the match against Norway.

He later apologized to his teammates and fans, acknowledging that he should not have left the camp and urging the federation to penalize him for his conduct.

Ronaldo was initially subject to an automatic provisional suspension, followed by an additional precautionary suspension, the federation said in a statement. The case will be handled on an expedited basis.

No final penalty has been determined. Details of the proceedings will remain confidential until the investigation is complete.

The Portuguese captain returned to action for Al Nassr on Friday after the international break, scoring the opening goal in a 3-0 victory over Diriyah in the Saudi Pro League.
