Iraq national team coach Graham Arnold renewed his contract through the 2027 AFC Asian Cup on Monday.
According to Arnold, the Iraqi Football Association (IFA) had offered him a four-year deal but he opted for a contract running through the Asian Cup
“I returned early to watch and identify new players ahead of the Gulf Cup and Asian Cup and to build the team for the future,” Arnold revealed. “You will see new faces the next phase.”
Addressing reports that his family had influenced his decision not to sign a longer contract, Arnold said they fully supported him and hoped he could deliver the success Iraq deserved.
The Australian coach indicated that he was closely following domestic league matches and urged players to maintain their fitness and remain ready for a national team call-up. “Any player selected to represent Iraq must be physically and technically prepared for the challenges ahead.”
Despite Iraq currently ranking eighth in Asia, Arnold said he believed the team could rise to second or third and qualify for the World Cup.
