Italy said Thursday it is closely tracking the abduction of American journalist Shelly Kittleson in Baghdad, coordinating with Iraqi authorities to secure her release.
The Italian Foreign Ministry said Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani ordered direct follow-up through the embassy in Baghdad, which is maintaining contact with Iraqi officials and media outlets linked to Kittleson.
The move comes as the case draws wider international attention. A report by The New York Times said Iraq’s Kataib Hezbollah faction has offered to negotiate her release in exchange for detained members. Amnesty International voiced concern over Kittleson’s safety, urging Iraqi and US authorities to act swiftly and hold those responsible accountable. Reporters Without Borders has also called for her immediate and unconditional release, warning of rising risks facing journalists in conflict zones.
Kittleson, a Rome-based freelance journalist, has contributed to outlets including Il Foglio, ANSA, Al-Monitor, BBC, and Politico. Her mother said their last contact was Monday, when the journalist appeared safe and shared photos.
She was taken near Saadoun Street in central Baghdad, where she had been staying at a hotel without dedicated security.
Washington reiterated its Level 4 travel advisory for Iraq, urging US citizens to leave immediately and warning of risks including kidnapping and attacks targeting Americans. Iraqi intelligence services have taken over the investigation, while authorities continue efforts to locate the journalist and secure her release.
