Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday reiterated that the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) must honor their commitments under the unity agreement with Damascus and support efforts to preserve Syria’s territorial integrity.
Speaking to reporters before leaving Azerbaijan, Erdogan said Ankara “will not allow Syria to relapse into instability” and urged the SDF’s main faction, the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), to complete their integration with Syrian security forces as agreed earlier this year.
His remarks came amid renewed clashes in northern Syria and persistent tension between Turkiye and the SDF, rooted in Ankara’s view of the YPG as an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has fought a decades-long insurgency against the Turkish state.
Since the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s rule and the formation of a transitional government in Damascus, Turkiye has expressed political support for the new leadership, viewing it as an opportunity to stabilize Syria and limit the influence of armed Kurdish factions near its border.
