The number of drowning deaths recorded in the Kurdistan Region’s Zakho Independent Administration has risen to 11 since the beginning of 2026, after a man in his 20s drowned in the Khabur River on Sunday, a security source told Shafaq News.
The source said the man had gone with friends to the Chamsirmo area to escape the heat when he entered a deep section of the river with strong currents and disappeared beneath the water.
Civil Defense teams recovered his body and transferred it to Zakho Emergency Hospital.
Rescue and Civil Defense teams have also saved 18 people from drowning within the Zakho administration since the beginning of the year, according to the source.
