Shafaq News / US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo expressed on Monday his country's support for the early legislative elections in Iraq.

Pompeo twitted about the details of the phone call he had made with Prime Minister-designate Mohamed Allawi.

He welcomed the promises made by Allawi on holding early elections in the country.

Pompeo said he reaffirmed the United States' commitment to support Iraq, while urging an end to the violence affecting Iraqi protesters, and called for those responsible for the violence to be held accountable.

The US Secretary of State stressed the need to take urgent measures to meet the legitimate demands of protesters in Iraq.

Yesterday, Allawi's media office announced that the latter had received a phone call from Pompeo.

The office said in a statement, Pompeo "congratulated Allawi on the occasion of the appointment to the position of prime minister, and wished him success in his new duties, in turn, Allawi thanked the US Secretary for contacting."

The statement added that during the call, a review of the latest political developments at the regional and international levels was discussed, stressing the need for coordination and joint work, and the support of the United States of America to Iraq in various fields in a manner that preserves the sovereignty of Iraq and achieving economic prosperity and activating cooperation frameworks between the two countries.

Baghdad and the Shiite-dominated areas and cities of central and south have been witnessing since October 1, demonstrations calling for early elections, fighting corruption, and the removal of all political parties that have ruled Iraq since 2003 until now.

These protests prompted Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi to resign from his post, under pressure from the religious reference of Ayatollah Ali Sistani.

It is assumed that Allawi, who was named Prime Minister after a difficult consensus reached by the political blocs, will present his formation to Parliament before the second of next March to vote on it, according to the constitution. However, Allawi revealed recently that he is working to present his ministry this week.

The former Minister of Communications, Muhammad Allawi does not have the support of protesters in Iraqi regions and cities, which have been witnessing a popular movement since early October of last year.
