Russia considers the Iraqi state a key partner, but foreign countries are attempting to hinder ties between the two nations, the Russian Ambassador to Iraq stated on Wednesday.
Speaking at a ceremony hosted by the Russian Embassy to mark the 81st anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany, Elbrus Kutrashev noted that Iraq continues to use Russian military equipment and highlighted Moscow’s support during the fight against ISIS.

He also pointed to the presence of Russian companies in the country’s energy sector, describing them as a longstanding contributor to Iraq’s oil industry.
In February 2025, Iraq and Russia signed a maritime transport agreement and three memorandums of understanding following the 10th session of the Iraqi-Russian Joint Governmental Committee. The documents covered healthcare, trade, and oil-sector cooperation.
