The Coordination Framework, Iraq’s largest parliamentary bloc, announced on Monday its backing for the decision to place all weapons under state control, while confirming ongoing efforts to expedite consensus on the nomination of a prime minister.

In a statement, the alliance said a state monopoly on arms must be implemented through clear legal mechanisms within a comprehensive national framework to ensure security and stability.

The comments followed statements by several armed factions backing limits on weapons outside state control, including Kataib Al-Imam Ali and Asaib Ahl Al-Haq. Kataib Hezbollah, however, rejected any discussion of disarmament, emphasizing that sovereignty and preventing foreign interference were prerequisites.

US Envoy to Iraq Mark Savaya earlier described the reported steps toward disarmament as encouraging, while calling for a clear and binding national framework.
